What an amazing time we had at the College Carnival on Saturday 26 May. We sincerely thank the members of the Parents and Friends Association and the Carnival Committee for their tireless efforts in organising such a wonderful community event and we thank our generous sponsors and all those who helped with serving on stalls and donating items for sale. The Carnival was such a lot of fun for all who came along. From the exciting rides, to the wide variety of interesting stalls and delicious aromas from the food vendors, to the entertainment provided by our students, every aspect of the Carnival added to the flavour of a very happy day.
The Primary students who provided entertainment at the College Carnival also entertained our special visitors on Grandparents Day, which was held on Thursday 31 May. Grandparents’ Day is always a wonderfully exciting day for the students as they love showing the senior members of their families all the things they have been learning at school. The Grandparents who were able to attend were fascinated by the vibrant classrooms, activities in the STEM room and the Performing Arts Showcase.
Two photo booths were provided for this special occasion this year and proved to be very popular. Grandparents could have their photos taken with their grandchildren and are able to receive a free digital photo. Please click here for information on how to access the photographs online.
We loved our Grandparents’ Day and look forward to when we can do it all again next year.
Families are reminded that the carparks near Little Saints Kindergarten are reserved for families with children enrolled in Kindy. It is very important that car spaces are available for these families at drop off times in the morning, particularly between 8.15am and 9.00am and at pick up times in the afternoons, between 2.30pm and 3.15pm. We request that other families DO NOT park in the Kindy parking spaces during these times as Kindy families must be able to deliver their children to school in a safe manner and within a short distance of the car park. Your cooperation in this matter is most important.

The children in our Kindergarten were very excited to participate in a Cultural Storytelling Day on Wednesday 30 May. Parents and Carers were invited to come along and share their favourite childhood story and an activity with the children. It was lovely to see the Chapel filled with storytelling and fun and to listen to the children asking questions and learning from our visitors. We thank all of our ‘Storytellers’ and those who organised activities for the children. It was a wonderful morning and a very special learning experience for the children.
Fun in the Library
The last two weeks have been an extra busy time for our library. On Wednesday 23 May all the primary classes participated in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). This is an event held around the country and involves schools, Kindergartens, libraries, bookshops and child care centres all reading the same book at the same time. The aim of this event is to promote the value of reading using an Australian children’s book that addresses key learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. This year the book was ‘Hickory Dickory Dash’ written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood. After enjoying listening to the story the students talked about the key themes and messages of the book, and gained an understanding of why the author may have written the story. This helps students to consider what they might write and why, in the future.
Our library quickly transformed from NSS last week to our annual Book Fair this week. Students are invited to purchase a book or other items available and can visit the library before and after school each day this week. Money raised through the sale of books will be used to purchase new resources for our library.
Storytime Fun was also held in the library on Monday 28 May for pre-Kindy children and the youngest members of our College community. Those who are not yet old enough to be enrolled at St John’s came along to the library for a story and fun activities. This monthly activity introduces children to the value of libraries and the fun of books. Families who have young children not yet of school age, are most welcome to come along to Storytime Fun, held on the last Monday of each month at 8.45am in the library.
