Easter STEM Event – Prep to Year Two
The students in Prep to Year Two are invited to come along to a very special Easter STEM Event event on Friday 23 March from 4.30pm to 6.00pm in the STEM Institute. Children attending need to come along with a parent or adult carer who can assist them with the various experiments they will be involved in. The senior student STEM Ambassadors will be helping our teachers to organise a range of Easter related, fun activities. It promises to be an exciting event.
The students in Years Four to Six are attending STEM lessons each week this year. The Year Six students have learnt how to create their own emojis and have used the greenscreen to edit photographs and place their own images into different scenes. There have certainly been lots of fun times in STEM lessons.
Year Five students have been learning how to code using BBC Micro:bits. These wonderful little devices have a range of amazing features including a 5×5 LED light panel, buttons, and a range of sensors. Students are coding by writing python code directly into their python editor, and then they ‘flash’ the information to their micro:bit. This term students have been programming the LED light panel. Next term we will be working on programming the buttons.
The Year Five and Six Robotics Club is in full swing, with student learning how to code LEGO Mindstorm EV3 robots. The students have a goal of entering the RoboCup Jr competition in August this year. Go team St John’s!
Do you have any spare LEGO around your house?
Are you constantly stepping on these small sharp objects and want to find a new home for them? Look no further! The Primary STEM Institute is on the hunt for LEGO. Donations of any sort of LEGO, big or small, will be gratefully accepted.
