It was a pleasure to welcome our students back after their holidays and to see them excitedly engaging with their learning programs. This term is the busiest for our Year 12 students as they prepare for their assignments and examinations and the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test. Their captains spoke about ramping up their efforts this term and supporting each other to all achieve their very best.
Semester One Academic Awards
On Monday 30 July, special Academic Assemblies will be held at both the primary and secondary campuses to celebrate the academic success of students over the course of Semester One. The Academic Award Criteria is available to parents on our portal.
All students should be using Learning Analytics to review their progress in Semester One and set goals for themselves for Semester Two. We encourage them to set academic goals and also personal goals. We use a series of targeted questions to guide students through the process to create a Goal Pathway.
Year 12 learning account competition
QCAA is giving Year 12 students the chance to win an Apple MacBook Pro! All Year 12 students who log in to their learning account via the Student Connect website before 31 August 2018 will go into the draw.
Deputy Principal – Curriculum
I hope this event on 20 June was helpful for students as they plan for their career. Emma Willmann spoke about a range of career options following school and offered opportunities for the students to engage with her (which they did). She spoke to them about her career in a humble fashion and there were plenty of practical and realistic tips.
“Think of who you want to be, not just what you want to be”.
“Seek honest feedback and assessment from people who know you well, about what careers you might be suited to”. Emma Willmann, Consultant and Personal Stylist
“Don’t worry if you don’t know what you want to do – volunteering and getting involved in clubs and societies at school or university can help you make connections”. (Ben Kozij, Old Collegian (2016))
Vicki Meyer, Community Development Officer from Volunteering Services Australia provided some practical information about volunteering. She discussed topics such as rights and responsibilities of volunteers and organisations, references, travel and reimbursement policies and virtual volunteering. There can be many benefits of volunteering to one’s career, but she emphasised the importance of not overcommitting.
