Connecting with our College Community
There are so many wonderful activities and events that take place at St John’s throughout the year and it is important to keep well informed of what is coming up by reading Presenting Primary and Ripples, taking note of emails you receive from the College and checking notifications on the College app. Please note the following dates in your diaries:
P&F Welcome Event – Friday 24 February, 6.00pm, Primary Campus
One very special occasion this month is our Parents and Friends Welcome Event at the primary campus on Friday 24 February. This event is a fabulous opportunity for all families to reconnect with one another and meet the new members of our College community. Children will be able to play on the oval with the senior student leaders while mums, dads and grandparents enjoy refreshments in The Meadow (the central courtyard space beside the Chapel undercover area). The evening will run from 6.00pm to 7.30pm and drinks and nibbles will be provided. All College families are most welcome to attend and we look forward to seeing you there.
Cyber Safety Session for Parents – Monday 13 February, 6.30pm, College Auditorium
I cannot encourage you strongly enough to attend this session designed specifically for parents. The rapid changes that continue to occur with digital communication and technology mean that the average person has a limited understanding of the dangers associated with using online devices and no knowledge of the simple processes that can be put in place to avoid these dangers.
Computer technology is an essential part of our lives today and it will grow to become even more ubiquitous as further advances keep being made. It is essential for teachers and parents to know how to safely use online communication technologies and to guide our children in developing safe and appropriate online practices.
Our guest speaker Susan McLean is an internationally renowned expert in the cyber safety field. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge in this area and we are very pleased that she found some time in her busy schedule to come to St John’s. Please do not miss this opportunity. We owe it to our children to be proactive in ensuring that they live in a safe environment and that they learn appropriate behaviours for the real world and the virtual worlds they will enter. This information session will provide us with support in this regard.
I do hope to see at least one adult from each family in attendance so that our entire College community will benefit from the expertise Susan provides. See you there!
Parent Information Evening – Tuesday 21 February, 6.00pm, Living Faith Chapel
On Tuesday 21 February we will be holding an important Parent Information Session. The evening will begin with an important Child Protection presentation at 6.00pm and all family members who wish to assist at the College in a voluntary manner, should attend. The Child Protection Session will be conducted in Living Faith Chapel.
Immediately following this session at 6.30pm, parents are invited to join their child’s teacher in their classroom to hear suggestions and strategies for helping children with their learning. The teachers will outline the year level programs including the International Baccalaureate PYP units of inquiry and what parents can do at home to assist their children with such things as reading, mathematics and inquiry learning.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Pancake Day – Tuesday 28 February
Students can enjoy the fun of eating freshly cooked pancakes on this day. Each pancake will cost $2 and all proceeds will be donated to two charities – the Anglican Board of Mission and Ronald McDonald House. Order forms have been emailed home and orders must be placed by 20 February. We would greatly appreciate the assistance of some parents in helping with preparing and distributing the pancakes on the day. If you are able to assist, please contact Mrs Linda Pettit in Primary Reception, firstname.lastname@example.org

Funky Hair Day – Friday 10 March
The Shave for a Cure initiative raises significant funds each year to support the fight against cancer. Students in Years One to Six are invited have their hair sprayed with temporary bright colours, by returning the permission slip and donating $4.00. They are also able to wear their hair in ‘funky’ hair styles, with bright ribbons and bands. However, they are asked to not arrive at school with their hair already coloured. The addition of colour should only occur at the College so it supports our fundraising initiative.
Children in Kindy and Prep are able to wear brightly coloured ribbons and hair styles for the donation of a gold coin. We thank families for supporting the College in this event.

Kindy and Prep Play Date – Saturday 11 March, 3.00pm to 4.30pm in the Prep Playground
Families with children in Kindergarten and Prep are invited to a special gathering in the Prep playground area of the primary campus. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to get to know one another while their children spend time together in the Prep playground. Invitations will be sent to families in the near future, so please make a note of this date in your diaries. We look forward to seeing you there.
Story Time Fun
Pre-kindy children and their parents are invited to join us on Monday 27 February, 8.45am to 9.15am in the Primary Library to enjoy “I am special” story time fun. Please click here for more information.
