Our Year Six students travelled off to their annual camp at Somerset Dam yesterday and from the smiles on their faces they were looking forward to all the fun experiences outdoor education can bring. Learning outside the classroom, being challenged to try new learning activities and develop strong interpersonal skills are all important aspects of our teaching and learning programs at St John’s. Another quality we aim to develop in all our children is that of leadership and our current Year Six students have spent the year as the student leaders of the primary campus. They will soon complete their time as leaders this year and have gained much from the experience.
The Year Five students have recently been engaged in a unit of inquiry which focuses on leadership and the vast majority of them have indicated their willingness to step into a leadership role in 2019. I have had the privilege of meeting with each of the Year Five students in the last week and hearing about their aspirations for leadership. It is so pleasing to know that we have many students who demonstrate the qualities of a good student leader. The primary student leaders for 2019 will be announced at an assembly to be held on Friday 2 November, at 2.00pm in Living Faith Chapel. At this assembly we will also announce those students who will be receiving awards at the Night of Celebration to be held at City Hall on Monday 5 November.
I have recently been working with a number of students involved in this year’s Innovation Challenge and assisting them with polishing their presentations and finalising their displays for our annual St John’s Innovation Challenge. The students involved will travel to the secondary campus next Tuesday 30 October, to present their ideas and innovations to a range of entrepreneurs from different industries. Families are most welcome to attend from 1pm to hear what the students have to say. They will set up their displays in the Performing Arts Centre Foyer and participate in heats during the afternoon. Those students selected for the finals will present their ideas to a panel of judges from 6.30pm that evening.
We congratulate all the students who are participating in this event.
Primary Interhouse Swimming Carnival – Tuesday 13 November
This year we will hold our annual Primary swimming carnival at The Valley Pool, 432 Wickham St, Fortitude Valley. This venue has been selected because it has plenty of shade for students and families. Further information about the Swimming Carnival will be sent home in the near future.
Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy
At St John’s we regard the safety of our students as paramount and have a number of policies and documents in place to ensure our students are provided with a safe and nurturing environment. One of those documents is an overarching strategy called the Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy, which outlines the steps we take at St John’s to ensure the safety of our students. The staff review this document and others on a yearly basis, making adjustments if required. We invite families and students to review the document and provide feedback. Copies are available in the Child Protection Folders at Reception or the library.
Upgrade of the Kindergarten Playground
We are very excited to announce that our Little Saints Kindergarten will be undergoing an upgrade during the coming Summer holiday period. The contractors working on the new playground will need access to the playground area for the duration of the holidays and this means our Early Years ABCC children will have outdoor play in another area during the vacation care period. We do apologise for any inconvenience that might arise during the redevelopment. We are really looking forward to seeing what the new playground looks like when school commences in late January.
We welcome a new staff member to the primary campus this week, Mrs Natalie Pavlakis. She is replacing Mrs Linda Pettit who has stepped into a different career path and is no longer working at St John’s. Mrs Pavlakis can be contacted on email@example.com if you require any information about St John’s Primary and special events.
